Steve Rogers is an iconic character, but he is also a man with a very specific moral center. At his best, Captain America is not whatever one political side needs him to be in the moment. He is not propaganda with muscles. He is a purpose-driven hero who speaks from conscience, restraint, duty, and common sense. Sometimes I feel like I’m one of the few people in the fanfiction and superhero space who truly understands Wonder Woman. Diana Prince or known as Diana of Themyscira, is not just another superhero who can be reshaped endlessly to fit whatever the zeitgeist happens to be. She is an icon. And with an icon, there is always a danger in confusing “modernizing” with “replacing.” A character can be written for a modern audience without having the pillars of that character torn down. The world around Wonder Woman can change. The conflicts can change. The supporting cast, setting, and tone can evolve. But Diana herself should still feel like Diana.
